What is the UK International Sportsperson visa?
The International Sportsperson visa is for internationally established elite sportspeople and qualified coaches who have been offered a role in the UK. It replaced the old Tier 2 (Sportsperson) and Tier 5 sporting routes, bringing them together under one category.
To use this route, your work must help develop your sport in the UK at the highest level, and your sport's recognised UK governing body must confirm this by endorsing you. You also need a job with a UK employer who holds a sponsor licence.
- Elite, internationally established sportspeople competing at the top level
- Qualified coaches whose role will develop their sport in the UK
- Both groups must be endorsed by their sport's official UK governing body
- You need a confirmed job offer from a licensed UK sponsor
What are the requirements?
The most important requirement is the governing body endorsement — without it, your application cannot succeed, so this is usually the first thing to sort out. Your sponsoring employer then issues your paperwork. Some requirements depend on how long you're applying for; for example you only need to prove your English if applying to stay longer than 12 months. Fees and surcharge amounts change, so always check the current figures on GOV.UK.
- Endorsement from your sport's UK governing body
- A valid Certificate of Sponsorship from your licensed UK employer
- English language ability (usually required only for stays longer than 12 months)
- Enough money to support yourself, unless your sponsor aim to secure this — check GOV.UK for the current amount
- A tuberculosis test result if you're coming from a listed country
How long it lasts, bringing family and settling
You can apply for a short-term stay of up to 12 months, or a longer visa of up to 3 years, depending on your role and what your governing body and sponsor support. Longer visas can usually be renewed while you remain eligible.
You can bring your partner and children under 18 as dependants, provided you can support them. On the longer route you may be able to settle: indefinite leave to remain is generally possible after 5 years in the UK, as long as at least one of your visas was granted for more than 12 months and you keep meeting the rules. Check GOV.UK for the current position.
How Immigration Lawyers UK helps
Immigration Lawyers UK is a network of SRA-regulated immigration solicitors who work on fixed fees, so you know the cost before you start. We support athletes, coaches, agents and sponsoring clubs across the UK.
Sports applications often go wrong on the detail — a missing endorsement, a Certificate of Sponsorship issue, or the wrong choice between the short-term and longer route. A solicitor checks your eligibility, gets the endorsement and sponsorship documents right, and prepares a clean, well-evidenced application.

Frequently asked questions
Do I really need an endorsement from my sport's governing body?
Yes. Endorsement from your sport's recognised UK governing body is essential. It confirms you're an elite sportsperson or qualified coach and that your role will help develop the sport in the UK. Without it, the application cannot succeed.
What's the difference between the short-term and longer visa?
You can apply for up to 12 months or up to 3 years. The short-term option suits temporary engagements; the longer route can usually be renewed and can count towards settlement. English is normally only required for stays over 12 months.
Can I bring my partner and children?
Yes. Your partner and children under 18 can usually join you as dependants, as long as you can support them. We can help prepare their applications alongside yours.
Can I switch to this visa or settle in the UK later?
In many cases you can switch into this route from another visa if you meet the requirements, including endorsement and sponsorship. On the longer route, settlement is generally possible after 5 years, provided at least one visa was for more than 12 months. Check GOV.UK.
