Eligibility and requirements
The exact requirements depend on which family relationship you are applying under, but most applications are assessed against the same core areas: a genuine relationship, and being able to live in the UK without relying on public funds.
Financial and other thresholds change from time to time, so we always check the current rules before advising you.
- A qualifying relationship – married, in a civil partnership, or living together for at least two years for unmarried partners
- A sponsor who is British or Irish, has settled status (indefinite leave to remain), or holds certain protected statuses
- Meeting the financial requirement – the income or savings level needed (check GOV.UK for the current figure)
- A good knowledge of English, usually shown by an approved test or qualification (some applicants are exempt)
- Suitable accommodation and a genuine, subsisting relationship supported by documents
The application process and what to expect
Most applications are made online, either from outside the UK before you travel or from inside the UK if you are extending or switching. You complete a form, pay the application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge, and give your biometrics (fingerprints and photo) at an appointment.
You then submit supporting evidence – your relationship history, your sponsor's income, and proof of where you will live. Straightforward partner applications are often decided within around 8 to 12 weeks, though complex cases can take longer.
A partner visa is typically granted for two years and nine months at first, then extended. After five continuous years on the partner route you can usually apply for settlement, known as Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).

Frequently asked questions
How long does a UK Family Visa last?
As a partner, the first visa is usually granted for two years and nine months, then extended. After five continuous years on the partner route you can normally apply for settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain). Other family routes can differ, so check your specific situation.
Do I have to meet a minimum income to bring my partner to the UK?
Yes, most partner applications must meet a financial requirement, shown through income, savings or certain benefits. The exact threshold changes, so always check GOV.UK for the current figure – or ask us to confirm what applies to you.
What is ILR?
ILR stands for Indefinite Leave to Remain – settled status that lets you live, work and stay in the UK permanently, with no time limit. Most family visa holders become eligible after a set number of years on the route.
Can you aim to secure my visa will be approved?
No reputable solicitor can aim to secure an outcome – the decision rests with the Home Office. What we can do is give honest advice, make sure your application is complete and well-evidenced, and give it the best possible chance.
