UK Marriage Visa

A UK Marriage Visa (officially the spouse or partner route) lets the husband, wife or partner of someone settled in the UK come to live with them here.

What you'll need to qualify

The Home Office looks for evidence across a few areas. The rules and figures change, so always check GOV.UK for the current detail.

  • A genuine, subsisting relationship — usually marriage, civil partnership, or living together for at least two years (check GOV.UK for the current rule)
  • Both partners normally aged 18 or over
  • A sponsoring partner who is British or Irish, settled, or holds another qualifying status
  • Meeting the minimum income or financial requirement (check GOV.UK for the current figure)
  • Suitable accommodation and a genuine intention to live together permanently in the UK
  • Meeting the English language requirement at the required level

The process and what to expect on timing

In short: you gather your documents, complete the online application, pay the fees and the Immigration Health Surcharge, then attend a biometrics appointment. After that, the Home Office reviews your case.

Processing times vary. As a rough guide, applications from outside the UK are often decided within around 12 weeks, and many in-country applications within around 8 weeks — but these are not promises, and times change, so check GOV.UK. The initial visa is granted for a set period, after which you extend, and you may become eligible to apply for settlement after a continuous qualifying period (usually five years).

How Immigration Lawyers UK helps

Immigration Lawyers UK is a network of SRA-regulated immigration solicitors working on a clear, fixed fee, so you know the cost before you commit. We work UK-wide, in plain English, and explain the jargon as we go.

A solicitor reviews your relationship evidence and finances, helps you avoid common mistakes that lead to refusals, prepares a strong application, and stays with you through to the decision — with honest advice about your prospects, never false promises.

What to do next

The simplest first step is a free, no-obligation assessment of your situation. Tell us a little about you and your partner, and a solicitor from our network will call you back to talk through your options and what a fixed-fee application would involve.

There's no pressure and no cost for that initial chat — just clear answers from a regulated solicitor.

Frequently asked questions

Is a UK Marriage Visa the same as a spouse visa?

Yes. "Marriage visa" is the everyday term; the official route is the spouse or partner family visa. They refer to the same thing.

Do my partner and I need to be married to apply?

Not always. You can usually apply if you're married or in a civil partnership, or if you've been living together for a qualifying period. Check GOV.UK for the current rule, and we can confirm which option fits your situation.

How much does the visa cost?

The Home Office charges an application fee plus the Immigration Health Surcharge, and these change over time, so check GOV.UK for the current figures. Our legal fee is separate, fixed and agreed up front.

Can I work in the UK on this visa?

Once your spouse or partner visa is granted, you can normally live, work and study in the UK. Fiancé(e) applicants generally cannot work until they've married and switched to the partner route.
